On Monday, August 5, 2024, Kern County Sheriff’s Office deputies assigned to the Civil Unit responded to the 8000 block of Melody Lane in Onyx, CA to serve a temporary domestic violence restraining order and move out order for Austin Springer, age 25.
On Wednesday, August 7, 2024, at approximately 8:00 a.m. Kern County Sheriff’s Office deputies assigned to the Kern Valley substation responded to investigate a restraining order violation on the 8000 block of Melody Lane in Onyx, CA.
Springer had multiple warrants in addition to the domestic violence restraining order violation.
Springer was located in a camping trailer to the rear of the property. Deputies made multiple attempts to make contact and an officer involved shooting occurred.
On August 30, 2024, Kern County Sheriff’s Office convened an incident review board examining the use of force in this incident. The use of force was determined to be within policy.
