SUMMARY:
On Friday, June 28, 2024, at 1:48 a.m., deputies from the Rancho Cucamonga Station attempted a traffic stop on a suspected DUI driver, near Foothill Boulevard and Archibald Avenue.  The driver of the vehicle failed to yield, and a pursuit ensued. The driver drove at high rates of speed and actively avoided the pursuing deputies. The pursuit lasted about six minutes and deputies were aided by the Ontario Police Department’s Aviation Unit.

The pursuit terminated when the suspect vehicle, a black 2018 Hyundai, traveled west on 16th Street and entered the intersection Mountain Avenue, where it collided with an uninvolved white 2010 Ford Mustang.  The suspect vehicle then veered off and struck a pole. During the collision, the suspect vehicle separated into three parts and caught on fire.  There were five occupants in the suspect vehicle, and all were ejected from the wreckage. Four were pronounced deceased at the scene, and a 13-year-old male was taken to an area hospital and is expected to survive.  The occupants of the other vehicle were also transported to the hospital as a precaution.

During the investigation, deputies discovered the suspect vehicle was reported stolen out of Fontana and a loaded firearm was found on the person of one of the deceased subjects.

There are three parallel investigations into this incident. The Rancho Cucamonga Station is investigating the pursuit, while the Coroner’s Office is conducting an investigation to positively identify the deceased suspects and determine a manner and cause of death for each.  The Upland Police Department is conducting a collision investigation.

Updates will be released when more information is known and available for release.
