Home Visit Leads to Arrests and Seizure of Firearms and Drugs, Angels Camp
On January 30, 2024, at approximately 12:00 p.m., the Calaveras County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Calaveras County Probation Department, carried out a home visit at the residence of 44-year-old Justin Reed in the 7000 block of Latigo Street in rural Angels Camp.
During the compliance check, deputies located a loaded firearm without any serial numbers, commonly referred to as a "ghost gun." A second loaded handgun was also discovered hidden within furniture by probation officers. Additionally, drug use paraphernalia was found within the residence.
The continued search led to the discovery of approximately 31 gross-weight pounds of processed marijuana. The compliance check resulted in the arrests of Justin Reed and Kristen Reed, aged 41. They were booked into the Calaveras County Jail without further incident. Justin Reed faces several charges including firearm-related offenses, violation of probation terms, and possession of marijuana for sale. Kristen Reed has been booked on firearm-related offenses and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Note on "Ghost Guns"
Privately made firearms (PMFs), often called “ghost guns,” present significant tracking challenges due to their lack of serial numbers. The investigation of crimes involving these unserialized firearms complicates efforts to trace their origins and connect them to other criminal activities.
