On July 4, 2023, at around 10:00 p.m., Simi Valley Police Officers responded to a report of a welfare check near the intersection of Fitzgerald Road and Appleton Road.  A caller reported to 911 dispatchers that a man was heard screaming that another man had a gun. 

When officers arrived, they learned through their investigation that Daoud Yahya, 39,  was in an altercation with neighboring residents over lighting fireworks in the street. During the altercation, Yahya grabbed a handgun, racked the slide, and pointed the gun at the victim. The victims fled the area and Yahya retreated into a residence in the 1000 Block of Appleton Road. 

While officers were investigating the incident, Yahya exited the residence and was taken into custody without incident. Yahya was arrested for 245(a)(2) P.C. Assault with a Firearm and was booked into the East Valley Sheriff's Jail.
