Sheriff's Office warns of a phone scam.
During the past few days, the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office has received several reports from citizens concerning a phone call they received from a “Sergeant Middleton” informing them that they have an arrest warrant for their failing to appear for jury duty. “This is definitely a scam” Chief Deputy John Moats said. The caller is claiming to be with the VCSO and informs them that they owe one thousand two hundred dollars for the warrant. The caller will then advise the only way to avoid arrest and a criminal record is to immediately send a six hundred and fifty dollar payment.
The VCSO does not have an employee with the name “Sergeant Middleton” nor do they have a Warrant Division. “Under no circumstances will we call demanding money for a warrant” Chief Moats said. Detectives with the VCSO continue to follow leads in this case.
