The Redwood City Police Department announces our 2015 Community Outreach & Engagement Programs

Date: February 12, 2015

The Redwood City Police Department announces our 2015 Community Outreach & Engagement Programs, featuring a Town Hall Meeting, “Coffee with the Cops”, Citizens Police Academies, Parent Project classes and Brown Bag Lunch events.

The Redwood City Police Department is pleased to invite the community to join us at one of the many community outreach programs being offered this year. These programs, the Town Hall Meeting, the “Coffee with the Cops” program, Citizens Police Academies and Parent Project classes are back by popular demand and are being offered at a variety of venues and times. In addition, we are also introducing a new program - “Brown Bag Lunch” corporate outreach events.

The theme for the 2015 Town Hall Meeting series is –
“Strengthening Community Partnership through Enhanced Outreach”

The members of the Redwood City Police Department recognize that a key component to ensuring public safety is maintaining a strong partnership with the community we serve. Our residents, businesses and visitors are our eyes and ears in the community, and each plays a vital role in our delivery of exceptional service. Our Town Hall Meeting this year will focus on presentations and programs designed to increase partnerships with community members by enhancing our lines of communication, improving our access to the community and increasing our public outreach through technology and innovative programs. By partnering with a proactive, well-informed public, we will continue to make strides toward reducing crime, reducing the fear of crime and improving the quality of life for the community we serve.

In addition to the Town-Hall meeting, the Redwood City Police Department is continuing its popular "Coffee with the Cops" events in 2015. The program is presented in both English and Spanish, and is offered by the police department in an effort to enhance communication with the community. "Coffee with the Cops" is an informal event designed to allow citizens the opportunity to ask questions and learn about new programs and efforts the police department is currently focusing on in their neighborhood. During "Coffee with the Cops," no formal presentation takes place, so citizens are welcome to drop in anytime during the event. Citizens will have the opportunity to meet the officers who are working in their neighborhoods. Officers will be answering questions, passing out crime prevention information, connecting citizens with City services and helping citizens get connected to the Redwood City Police Department's Social Media sites.

Back by popular demand, the Redwood City Police Department continues to hold two Citizen Police Academy Classes in both English and Spanish. Our Citizens Police Academy program brings "real life" law enforcement skills and experience to the community. From narcotics to criminal law, gangs to SWAT teams, and juvenile crime to K9, the Redwood City Citizen’s Police Academy offers an in-depth, "real life" look at the day-to-day experience of police work. The Academy is a rigorous and exciting 11-week program that is modeled after the State's curriculum for actual police academies.

The Parent Project is a 12-week course taught by the Redwood City Police Department Juvenile Services Division. The program teaches proven concepts and methods designed to empower parents and reign in the abusive and destructive behavior of 'out-of-control' teens, thus improving the family dynamic. English speaking classes begin in March, while Spanish speaking classes start in November. Classes are held Tuesday evenings from 6:00 - 9:00 pm, the program is free of charge and child care is provided.

Lastly, the Police Department will hold several “Brown Bag Lunch” corporate outreach events with our community business partners in order to address the unique dynamic their business adds to our community. These Brown Bag Lunch corporate outreach events give the Police Department and Redwood City businesses the opportunity to establish an understanding of our Departments service delivery model, allows for establishing important face to face connections, fosters an environment of partnership and establishes an understanding of the Department’s role in their corporate workplace safety plan. These events are also designed to be informative to the employees of these corporations by providing safety tips and answers to any questions or concerns they may have about traffic, parking and crime in Redwood City.

The Redwood City Police Department utilizes a variety of social media platforms to connect with our community including Nixle alerts, which are frequently used to notify residents and commuters of road closures and updates on developing events throughout the City. Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Google Blogger, Vimeo and Video Chat are also used regularly by the Department. Citizens can sign-up for the Department’s social media programs at
