**UPD**#LASD Homicide Detectives Responded to a Deputy Involved Shooting, 6100 Block of Clarkson Avenue #Maywood

Los Angeles County Sheriff's Homicide investigators responded to a deputy involved shooting investigation. The incident was reported Thursday, January 26, 2023, at approximately 5:38 a.m., on the 6100 block of Clarkson Avenue in the city of Maywood.

Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department- Operation Safe Street Bureau (East Los Angeles Station) were serving a warrant on the 6100 Block of Clarkson Avenue in the city of Maywood.

Deputies approached the residence, detained a cooperative male adult at the front porch, and made announcements demanding entry.  Deputies observed a female adult exit a door on the side of the residence.  They detained the female adult who was cooperative and advised deputies she was the owner of the residence.

A second male adult inside the location became verbally aggressive toward deputies and armed himself with a firearm, telling them to get away from his residence.  Deputies attempted to de-escalate the situation by explaining to him that he was not the focus of their presence at the location.  The male adult approached the open side door of the residence holding the firearm in his hand, pointing it up toward the ceiling. The male adult walked to the threshold of the side door and pointed the firearm at deputies who were standing outside the residence and a deputy involved shooting occurred.

The male adult was struck by gunfire several times in the upper torso and pronounced dead at the location by Los Angeles County Fire Department personnel.

A loaded firearm was recovered at the scene.

Whenever a deputy-involved shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies, and a person is struck by gunfire, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene.  These include separate investigations by the Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau.  The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department immediately notifies the Office of the Inspector General who sends a representative to the incident scene and provides independent oversight throughout the investigative process.  Once concluded, a preliminary review is conducted by the Critical Incident Review Panel to determine whether any immediate actions are warranted.  Every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.  Input from Constitutional Policing Advisors is provided during the process.  The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office, Justice System Integrity Division, conducts a legal analysis to determine whether any criminal charges will be filed and if the shooting was legally justified.
