IMPD Detectives Arrest Boyfriend in Death of Female on West Side

INDIANAPOLIS-On November 23, 2021 Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) Homicide detectives arrested 49-year-old John Henry for his role in the death of 33-year-old Tara Smith.
On October 28, 2020, just after 10:25 p.m., IMPD officers were dispatched to 2233 Grand Prix Dr. on a report of a person shot. When officers arrived, they located an adult female, later identified as Tara Smith inside the residence with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound(s). Indianapolis Emergency Medical Services (IEMS) arrived and she was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Upon officer’s arrival they were advised by the victim’s boyfriend, John Henry, that Tara Smith had taken her own life. Homicide detectives responded to the scene and began their investigation. Detectives believed that foul play was suspected based on their initial observations at the scene.
The Indianapolis-Marion County Forensic Services Agency responded to assist in identifying and collecting potential forensic evidence. The Marion County Coroner’s Office (MCCO) assisted detectives.
On March 17, 2021 the MCCO determined Tara Smith’s death to be a homicide.
On November 23, 2021, IMPD Homicide Detective Gray worked with the Marion County Prosecutors Office and was able to ascertain an arrest warrant for John Henry for the charge of murder. On November 24, 2021 the IMPD Violent Crimes Unit located and arrested John Henry for murder for his alleged role in the death of Tara Smith.
