Two different scams reported to Sheriff's office. Do not become a victim. Please see Web Site for more details.

The Sheriff's office received reports from two different residents about two different scams. Both residents were suspicious and did not follow through with the request that the scammers had made to them.
The first scam involved a resident receiving an e-mail from a friend. The e-mail asked the resident to send money to the friend who needed help paying a hotel bill while vacationing in London, England. The resident became suspicious and found out the friend was not on vacation but at work in Virginia. The Sheriff's Office found out that someone hacked into the persons Facebook site and was sending e-mails to all of the friends listed on the site. The hacker/scammer was trying to get money wired to London by Western Union.
The second scam was a resident received an e-mail from what they thought was Wachovia Bank. The e-mail asked them to call the number listed on the e-mail and give them their bank account number so it could be changed do to internal problems at the bank.
A bank should never ask you to change your account over the phone or through e-mail. Your local bank would contact you in person or you would receive a letter telling you of a problem and that you need to go to your branch to make changes to your account. Never give your account information out over the phone or by e-mail if at all possible.
There are more scams than ever before do to the computer age that we are in. Please be cognizant of anyhting that is suspicious and report any attempted scams to the Sheriff's Office.
