Officer Injured After Being Struck by Suspected DUI Driver (20-9262)

On 8/12/2020 at 8:50pm, the Santa Rosa Fire Department requested Santa Rosa Police Department assistance with traffic control, while they addressed a fire in the area of Cleveland Av & Ridgeway Av.  One officer arrived on scene at 9:00pm and parked his marked patrol vehicle on Cleveland Av, in the intersection of Ridgeway Av.  Moments later, a white Hyundai Accent struck the rear driver’s side quarter panel of the officer’s patrol vehicle.  The officer’s patrol vehicle lights were activated before the collision occurred.
The driver of the Hyundai, Maria Lopez, (a 39-years old, Santa Rosa resident, had objective signs of intoxication.  A SRPD Accident & DUI Investigator took over the investigation.  After an extensive investigation, Lopez was determined to be driving under the influence of alcohol. She was arrested and booked into Sonoma County Jail for violation of 23153(a) CVC – DUI causing injury.  Lopez was not injured.
The officer sustained minor injury and was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment.  The officer was later released.
