San Leandro woman arrested for inappropriate posts towards minorities

A San Leandro woman was identified and arrested last night after posting insensitive messages towards minorities in a San Leandro community.

The woman, 52 yr-old Nancy Arechiga, a resident of San Leandro, was located late last night by officers investigating this incident. Shortly after 7:00 pm Friday, San Leandro Police officers were dispatched to the quiet Heron Bay neighborhood regarding several reports of random notes placed on residents' doors.

The notes, which contained various insensitive messages towards minorities, were found affixed to 5 different homes. The handwritten notes suggested that people, not native to America, leave the country immediately. The messages were directed towards women and children as well.

One of the residents captured the incident on his Ring camera and provided a full description of the woman. Arechiga was soon located near the community while officers were still in the area. Arechiga was carrying a backpack that contained handwritten notes of the same nature.

SLPD investigated a similar incident on Thursday evening when a related note was found on the Heron Bay trail, affixed to an information board. That note partially read, "no Asians allowed, leave immediately." That post was quickly removed by a good samaritan and discarded. It is presumed that Arechiga is also responsible for that posting.

Arechiga was arrested for these inappropriate messages that instilled fear and intimidation upon those residents.

"San Leandro is a community of beautifully diverse people, who share a common desire to live in harmony, and free from intimidation," said San Leandro Police Lieutenant Isaac Benabou. "We welcome people's rights to express themselves, but not in a manner that infringes upon a community's sense of security and wellbeing."

Arechiga was booked into Alameda County's Santa Rita Jail in Dublin. However, due to the current state bail schedule, she has been cited and released from custody.
