HOW THE COVID-19 NOTIFICATION PROCESS WORKS
Each law enforcement agency must designate a single point of contact with the Health Department. When a South River resident tests positive for COVID-19, the contact person for our department is notified of the resident’s name, address, age and sex. Our contact person then enters that information into our department’s Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system.
In the event there is a call for service at an address of a resident with COVID-19, our CAD system alerts the dispatcher. The dispatcher then alerts responding personnel to take the proper personal protective equipment (PPE) precautions. This is the only time the information is known to other employees of the South River Police Department, aside from our designated point of contact.
Some residents have inquired about the ages and sex of COVID-19 cases as well as a general area where they reside. Simply put, we cannot share that. Consistent with the guidelines we must follow, even our police officers and other first responders are not made aware of that information unless the need arises for them to respond to the person’s residence. We will continue to share with our residents the number of positive COVID-19 cases in South River.
The Middlesex County Health Department is the lead in the investigation of these cases and is responsible for all notifications. Neither the South River Police Department nor the Borough of South River receive information that identifies the place of employment, previous whereabouts, or previous movements of individuals who test positive for COVID-19. Notifications to any workplaces, businesses, or individuals who infected persons may have had contact with is done by the Health Department.
