Hit and Run Traffic Collision results in death

On Sunday March 15th at approximately 8:40 PM Santa Maria Police Officers were dispatched to a call of a “man down” in the area of Main Street and Blosser Rd. When officers arrived, they located a mangled bicycle and the bicyclists lying off to the side of the road south of Main Street. The bicyclists sustained major injuries and officers attempted medical intervention. AMR responded and transported the bicyclists to Marian Medical Center, however, he died as a result of his injuries. The bicyclists has been identified as Ramon Maldonado (male) age 48, a Santa Maria Resident.

The driver of the suspect vehicle fled prior to Police arrival. At this point there are no identified witnesses to the collision. The Santa Maria Police Department Traffic Unit/ Traffic Investigators and the Santa Maria Police Department Crime Lab (CSI) responded to the scene to investigate. Through investigation, there was evidence in the roadway and other evidence obtained that lead the investigators to believe the suspect vehicle is a gray SUV or van. More than likely, this unknown vehicle will have front end damage from the collision as Maldonado was struck from behind. This is an ongoing investigation. We are asking for the public’s assistance in any information regarding this hit and run collision.

If you have any information, leads, or witnessed the collision please call the Santa Maria Police Department at (805) 928-3781 x 2277, Traffic Sergeant McGehee x 2291, or Traffic Officer Brewer x 1201.
