Notice: Urgent Health Alert Issue Regarding COVID-19

NOTICE: URGENT HEALTH ALERT ISSUED REGARDING COVID-19
Due to the conditions caused by COVID-19 the Town of Columbus is taking precautionary measures as recommended by the CDC as well as other state and federal government entities. The Town of Columbus Council and management have enacted the following precautions to protect the general public and Town of Columbus employees during this time of uncertainty:
Administration
Town Hall will be closed to the public, effective March 20, 2020, for an initial period of six business days. The situation will be reassessed, and leadership will determine if it is prudent to re-open the lobby to the public beginning Monday March 30.
Administrative staff will continue to work during office hours, and you can reach someone via phone as usual by calling 828-894-8236.
During this time, we encourage all utility customers to make payments via the web at www.columbusnc.com or phone through Official Payments by calling 1-844-224-6770. An account number is required to make a payment remotely, and there is a $2.40 charge that is collected by the third-party payment processor. Due to the circumstances at hand, anyone who makes an online or phone payment during the business days that Town Hall is closed to the public will receive an account credit equal to the convenience fee paid by the customer in order to make this option more accessible to everyone. If it is not possible to pay remotely, you can drop your payment and bill stub in the payment drop box located in the front door of Town Hall at 95 Walker Street or mail via USPS. The drop box, as well as our post office box (PO Box 146 Columbus, NC 28722), will be checked daily during this time to ensure that all payments are recorded in a timely manner. All Town forms and documents can be found online at www.columbusnc.com, and can be emailed to [email protected] or [email protected]. Town staff will work to keep the public updated on any pertinent information or announcements.
Public Works
All essential functions of the Public Works department will continue as usual. Non-essential services such as brush collection may be delayed as our limited staff deals with more immediate needs. Requests can still be filed with Town Hall staff and will be addressed as soon as possible.
Sanitation
Currently, there is no change in the sanitation schedule from GFL. We will inform customers of any changes as they are made available to us.
Police Department
The Columbus Police Department will continue to operate as usual, but please consider a phone call at 828-894- 5464 to resolve any issue you may have before visiting the office to reduce the risk of spreading germs.
