Public Health Order and Police Authority Service Modifications

Today, March 16, 2020, Marin County’s Public Health Officer Dr. Matt Willis, along with the public health officers of six other Bay Area jurisdictions, issued a legal order directing residents to shelter at home for the next three weeks beginning March 17. The order limits activity, travel and business functions to only the most essential needs.

The Public Health Order becomes effective at midnight tonight – 12:01 am on Tuesday, March 17th and will continue until 11:59 pm on Tuesday, April 7, 2020. The order may be extended, rescinded, superseded, or amended in writing by the County’s Health Officer.

We know there are A LOT of questions surrounding the Public Health Order and what it means for you and your families. Marin County HHS created an extensive FAQ document to help understand the Order. You can find both the FAQs and the Order itself at coronavirus.marinhhs.org

While this is an unprecedented situation, we will continue to respond to calls and provide service to our communities. However we are instituting some modifications to our operational procedures. These temporary modifications are in no way intended to compromise the public’s safety. We ask for your assistance by being mindful of our efforts to prioritize safety for everyone.

• If you feel the need to conduct business at either of our stations we would prefer a telephone call from your home first. If you must come to the station you may pick up the telephone located in the lobby and you’ll be immediately connected to a dispatcher. 9-1-1 and all non-emergency lines will continue to function as usual 24/7/365.

• Officers will take police reports by telephone if at all possible, in order to reduce the need for in-person contact or responding to your residence. However, a phone report may not be feasible for all crimes. We do ask that you consider the necessity for a report during the time of the Order.

You can further assist us by reading the FAQ document and referring to the Marin HHS website when you have questions. Please do not call 9-1-1 or our non-emergency lines with questions about the order. Our call takers and dispatchers have exactly the same documents and information that you do. We do have the authority to enforce the restrictions detailed in the Public Health Order, however we believe that during this extraordinary situation we will handle those types of calls with an educational and compassionate approach.
