Why I Wear the Badge - Officer Hilda Velasco

#WhyIWearTheBadge is a campaign designed to highlight the diversity and commitment of the law enforcement profession. The badge is a symbol of courage, strength, and integrity. With the display of the badge comes great responsibility. So why do hundreds of thousands of men and women wear the badge each day?

For as long as she can remember, Hilda Velasco has always dreamed of being a police officer, specifically a K-9 handler. After high school, Hilda attended San Jose State University where she joined the SJSU Police Department Cadet Program. Being part of the Cadet program only reassured her that being a police officer was what she really wanted to do.

In 2014, Hilda was hired as a police officer for the City of Watsonville. While at the Watsonville Police Department, she was a Cadet advisor and was also selected to be a Field Training Officer. After serving the Watsonville community for 2 1/2 years, she began a career with the Santa Clara Police Department.

Hilda is currently assigned to the SCPD K-9 unit and she is partnered with a two-year-old German Shepard, Kairo. Hilda enjoys spending time with Kairo, family and friends. During her free time, she also enjoys bicycling, hiking and going to the beach.

In Hilda’s words, “I wear the badge because it’s truly fulfilling to be able to protect and serve the Santa Clara community. Every day is a new experience, and a new chance to learn and make a difference. I also wear the badge to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice."
