The crew of Air Rescue 6 conducted a hoist rescue of an injured hiker in Joshua Tree National Park

LOCATION: Indian Cove Campground, Joshua Tree National Park, CA
VICTIM: Harshad Kalyankar, 28 yoa male, of Tucson, AZ
SUMMARY:
On March 7, 2020, Kalyankar was hiking in the Joshua Tree National Park when he fell approximately 10 feet off of a large rock and sustained non-life threatening injuries. Kalyankar, who was hiking alone, was able to call 911 on his mobile phone to request assistance.
San Bernardino County Fire Department personnel responded to the scene and made contact with Kalyankar. They confirmed that based on his injuries, as well as the terrain, a hoist rescue would be necessary.
Sheriff's Air Rescue 6 responded to the area to conduct the hoist. They hovered approximately 70' above Kalyankar and the crew chief lowered an air medic to his location. The air medic assessed Kalyankar's injuries and was able to place him into a rescue harness. The crew chief then hoisted Kalyankar up to the helicopter, followed by the air medic.
Air Rescue 6 transported Kalyankar to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs for treatment of his injuries.
