Again yesterday we had a resident lose a significant amount of money through a telephone scam.
The Cornwall woman received a call around noon from a male claiming to be from the U.S. Marshals Service in Texas telling her she would be arrested unless she purchased multiple gift cards and provided the card numbers to the caller. He told her not to go to the police because she would be immediately arrested at the police station. When the woman finally did come to the police station at 4:25 PM, she was still on the phone with the caller; the call had lasted approx. 4 1/2 hours while the woman went to various locations to purchase the cards.
The woman lost $2700.00 in this scam.
