2020 BRUSH & YARD WASTE SCHEDULE

2020 Brush and Yard Waste Collection
March 2, 2020

Brush and Yard Waste Pick-up
The City of Oneonta curbside residential brush and yard waste
collection program runs from April through November. Please have brush and yard waste out no sooner than the weekend before your scheduled pickup to prevent possible code violation. Brush and yard waste cannot be left out on the median between collection dates. Keep in mind that crews can move through an area very quickly, and once they pass your address they may not return until the next scheduled pickup date. The amount of brush and yard waste that has been placed out citywide dictates how quickly your area will be reached, but each area of the City is typically completed by Friday of the scheduled week.  Major storms may affect the pickup schedule.

The following procedures must be followed to ensure the collection of your brush and yard waste:
  • Brush and yard waste must be at the curb for collection no later than 7:00 a.m. on Monday of your scheduled week
  • Please have brush and yard waste out no sooner than the weekend before your scheduled pickup to prevent possible code violation
  • Please note that the maximum diameter for brush is 3” (logs cannot be split)
  • Maximum length of limbs is 4’
  • Brush and bags of yard waste should be placed in the median, between the sidewalk and the curb, and will not be collected from alleys or vacant lots. If the sidewalk and the curb are contiguous, with no median, brush should be placed on the lawn adjacent to the sidewalk
  • Stack brush in one large pile away from mailboxes, utility poles/boxes, hydrants, and parked vehicles; place bags of yard waste next to the pile of brush
  • Brush/limbs must not be tied, bundled, in containers, bagged, or in the street
  • Yard waste bags must not exceed 50 pounds per bag, and may only consist of leaves, twigs, evergreen clippings, roots, stumps, and plants; please do not overfill bags – they should be able to be closed
  • Yard waste bags shall not contain any rocks, dirt, lumber, firewood, household trash, or foreign objects
  • Any generic biodegradable yard waste bag can be used; plastic bags will not be collected
  • Program is for residentially-generated brush only, not contractor removals or trimmings
If your brush was out at 7:00 a.m. on Monday of your scheduled collection week and not collected by the end of the workday on Friday, please notify the Department of Public Service no later than the following Monday.  For missed collection calls received after Monday, collection will be handled during the next scheduled collection. Collection schedule changes may occur, from time to time, for various reasons. In such cases, updates will be sent to residents of the affected wards via Nixle notification.

Brush and Yard Waste Drop-off

City residents are reminded that they may bring brush and yard waste to the disposal site on Silas Lane on weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. City residents must first sign in and get a key from the Central Garage office at 18 Silas Lane (use the entrance door clearly labeled “Yard Waste Disposal Sign In Here”). Residents will be directed to the drop-off location, and must then lock the gate upon leaving and return the key to Central Garage. The Central Garage is closed for all holidays observed by the City of Oneonta. Only brush and yard waste conforming to the same specifications as that which is collected by City crews is allowed (see above).  No household items, trash, lumber, rocks, dirt, firewood, or foreign objects.
