Update to Burglary and Vandalism case in Petaluma

Incident:                 Burglary and Vandalism
Crime:                         459 PC and 594 PC
Suspect:                       Unknown
Report Number:          PPD 20-0753
Incident Date  :           Tuesday February 18, 2020
Incident Time:             Approximately 2018 hours (8:18 pm)
Location:                     1900 block of Cardinal Way, Petaluma

Incident Summary

On the above date and time, a resident on the 1900 block of Cardinal Way in Petaluma returned home from a shopping trip to discover a person or persons had entered the residence and damaged numerous items within.  The victim and her children (who had been with her on the shopping trip) withdrew from the house and waited nearby in their vehicle.  Lights were seen turning off and on inside the house.  The victim called the Petaluma Police Department to report what she had discovered.

Just as the first responding officers were approaching the area, the victim reported a male adult was leaving the front of the residence, entering a vehicle, and driving away.  Officers intercepted the vehicle on Turtle Creek Lane, which runs parallel to Cardinal Way on the north side.

The driver of the aforementioned vehicle was initially detained but was later released on scene after it was determined he was not involved in the crime.  The subject lives in the neighborhood, he had noticed the open front door, and he had noticed the victim’s dog outside, which prompted him to check on the residence.

Other officers formed a team to enter the home and ensure no suspects were inside; when they attempted entry, they encountered resistance at the front door by an unseen suspect who forced it closed from the inside.  Believing one or more suspects had barricaded themselves inside the two-story home, patrol officers on scene attempted to set up a perimeter and summoned additional resources.  Ultimately, the Petaluma Police Department’s SWAT and Crisis Negotiations Teams were activated in an effort to convince the suspect(s) to surrender or, failing that, make a tactically safe entry into the residence to make arrest(s).  The SWAT Team’s armored rescue vehicle was deployed as part of that activation.

Because nearly all of the Petaluma Police Department’s available patrol resources were committed to the incident on Cardinal Way, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office was asked to deploy deputies to assist the Petaluma Police Department with routine policing duties for the duration of the incident.

Ultimately, the Petaluma Police Department’s SWAT Team made entry into the residence and found no one inside.  Numerous household items had been destroyed or damaged by the suspect(s).  During the initial investigation, officers collected evidence (which included photographs and two items taken for fingerprint processing); it had not been established that anything had been stolen from the residence.

Initial investigation also suggests this incident may not have been a random crime.  Follow-up investigation is being conducted by the Petaluma Police Department’s Investigations Unit.  Anyone with information concerning the identity and/or motive of the suspect(s) is encouraged to contact Detective Ryan McGreevy at 707-778-4334.
