Lane Restrictions Planned on U.S. 41 White River Bridge between Knox and Gibson County

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 21, 2020
Lane Restrictions Planned on U.S. 41 White River Bridge between Knox and Gibson County
KNOX COUNTY, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation announces bridge project on the structure spanning the White River in Knox and Gibson Counties, set to begin in early March. Beginning on or around Monday, March 2, contractors will begin a rehabilitation project on the U.S. 41 White River Bridge at the Knox/Gibson County line. During this contract, workers will close one bridge at a time to rehabilitate and repair the driving surface. While one bridge is closed, one lane of traffic will be maintained both north and southbound on the open bridge, utilizing median crossovers.
The first phase of this project is expected to take about a week. Beginning March 2, the passing lanes on U.S. 41 both north and southbound will be closed to construct the median crossovers. On March 23, crews will close the southbound bridge entirely and route traffic from the southbound lanes into the northbound lanes. One lane of traffic in both directions will be maintained while the southbound bridge is under construction. Once the southbound bridge is complete, crews will reverse the traffic control devices, close the northbound bridge and route traffic onto the southbound side in the same manner.
Lane widths will be restricted to just over 13 feet. Wider loads should seek an alternate route. INDOT has committed to working with local farmers during the planting and harvesting seasons to help move their equipment. Local farmers should give a week’s notice to INDOT by calling 1-855-463-6848 to schedule a time to move wider equipment across the bridge.
Depending upon weather conditions, the entire project is scheduled to be completed by early November. During the project, traffic control devices will be in place around the clock. INDOT urges drivers to slow down and stay alert near crews.
