Student Cited for Bringing an Airsoft Pistol on School Campus

DATE/TIME: February 18, 2020, 12:12 p.m.
INCIDENT: Report of Weapon on School Campus
LOCATION: Simi Valley High School, 5400 Cochran Street
REPORT NUMBER: #2020-8067

Narrative:

On Tuesday, February 18, 2020, Simi Valley Police Department School Resource Officer Glenn Ellis responded to Simi Valley High School on a report of a weapon on campus. When Officer Ellis arrived at the scene, school staff informed him that they received some reports that a 15-year-old male student was in possession of a possible handgun on campus.

As the investigation progressed, the student was detained at his residence by some assisting officers without incident. Officer Ellis responded to the student’s residence and recovered the weapon which was identified as an airsoft pistol. The student was cited and released to a guardian for possessing the airsoft pistol on the school campus.

It should be noted, that there was never a threat made to anyone, nor did the student in question ever brandish the weapon. Nevertheless, Simi Valley Police Department would like to remind community members that it is Illegal to bring a weapon on a school campus.

Some examples of weapons that are illegal on school campuses:

• Firearms

• Anything that expels a non-metallic airsoft projectile typically made of plastic or metallic projectile such as a BB or pellet by: air pressure, CO2 pressure, or spring action; or spot marker

• Dirk or Dagger

• Ice Pick

• Knives

• Razor with unguarded blade

• Taser or stun gun

All questions related to school policing should be directed to School Resource Officers Glenn Ellis and Gene Colato.
