Major Clean Up Accomplished On Atlantic Ave

Since June of 2019, the Fairfield Police Department’s Code Enforcement Unit has been working on numerous complaints about a residence in the 200 block of Atlantic Avenue. Many of the complaints alleged drug use, the accumulation of trash and criminal activity causing a nuisance. Some specific complaints included disturbances, junk cars, vermin, and syringes left in the street. Multiple inspections revealed a mass collection of trash and numerous junk vehicles in the back and side yards. Additionally it is believed individuals at the residence were using areas outside the house as a bathroom, in spite of having both garbage and water service.

It can be painful for us, as it is for the public, but many code enforcement actions take time and lack the immediacy of other law enforcement actions. Homeowners are given opportunities to rectify the problems, as voluntary compliance to the codes is our primary goal. Compliance did not occur in this case and we initiated further steps to fix the problems. The journey to court approved abatement can be long and regrettably takes time. Your Code Enforcement team stuck with it and eventually was able to get the approval needed.

Yesterday, members of the Fairfield Police Dept.’s Code Enforcement Unit served an abatement warrant at the house. With the assistance of a local contractor, the vehicles were towed and approximately 4 tons (8,000 pounds) of trash was removed. Some before and after photos have been attached.

The Fairfield Police Department’s Code Enforcement Unit works to get compliance of municipal and civil codes involving the lack of care and maintenance on private properties. The five-person team fields numerous complaints for the entire City. If you have a complaint, you can reach Code Enforcement at (707) 428-7587. Please be patient and the team will work to get requests accomplished as soon as they can.
