Flash Flood Watch until 07:00PM Tuesday

...HEAVY RAINFALL AND POTENTIAL FLASH FLOODING THIS AFTERNOON THROUGH TUESDAY... .A slow-moving frontal boundary will continue to bring moderate to heavy rainfall to the southwest North Carolina mountains, parts of northeast Georgia, and far western Upstate South Carolina through tonight and into Tuesday. With the ground saturated from heavy rainfall last week, and many streams running at elevated flow, additional flash flooding is expected to redevelop within the watch area beginning tonight and continuing into Tuesday. In addition, some main stem river flooding is likely to develop within and close to the watch area. The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a

* Flash Flood Watch for portions of northeast Georgia, western North Carolina, and upstate South Carolina, including the following areas, in northeast Georgia, Franklin, Habersham, Rabun, and Stephens. In western North Carolina, Graham, Haywood, Macon, Northern Jackson, Southern Jackson, Swain, and Transylvania. In upstate South Carolina, Anderson, Greater Greenville, Greater Oconee, Greater Pickens, Greenville Mountains, Oconee Mountains, and Pickens Mountains.

* through Tuesday evening

* Rainfall amounts through Tuesday are expected to range from 2 to 4 inches across the Piedmont, with 3 to 6 inches expected across the mountains. Locally higher amounts can be expected. In light of the saturated ground and elevated stream flows resulting from last week's heavy rainfall, this rainfall will likely result in development of localized flash flooding, some of which could be significant.

* Rapid rises above bankfull on streams and creeks may occur, along with the threat of flooded roadways. Flooding is also likely to re-develop on main stem rivers in and close to the watch area. Numerous landslides were reported in southwest North Carolina last week, and the additional heavy rainfall will greatly increase the risk of additional landslides the Smoky Mountains, Nantahala Mountains, Unicoi Mountains, and other high terrain areas of southwest North Carolina, northeast Georgia, and South Carolina.
