Suspect Gets 11 Years in Jail for Endangering Detective and Eluding Police

Suspect Endangered Detective, Fled Police, Sentenced to 11 Years in Prison

Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Christopher L.C. Kuberiet announced that a South Brunswick man has been sentenced to serve 11 years in a New Jersey state prison for eluding after fleeing from police following a motor vehicle stop. South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond Hayducka praised the sentence as a strong message about endangering the public by fleeing police. “This was not the first time this suspect decided to endanger the public by fleeing police. His actions endangered the life of Sergeant Eric Tighelaar and countless motorist. This entire incident was escalated by the suspect and could have ended tragically. The 11 year prison sentence sends a clear message that people who put the public at risk will face serious consequences,” said Chief Hayducka.

Alan Fratello, 48, of South Brunswick was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Diane Pincus to an extended term of 11 years with 5 years of parole ineligibility in a New Jersey state prison. Fratello received this extended term due to his prior criminal convictions.

The sentence was imposed after Fratello was found guilty by a jury on March 21, 2019, of eluding in the second degree.

During a six-day trial that began on March 7, 2019, Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Keith Abrams and Middlesex County Assistant Prosecutor Deanna Himelson presented evidence and testimony showing that on June 12, 2018, Fratello, after being stopped for erratic driving, grabbed the necktie of Sergeant Eric Tighelaar, drove across the median, and sped away in an attempt to flee the scene. He surrendered to the South Brunswick Police Department the next day.

Chief Hayducka thanked the Middlesex County Prosecutors Office for all their work in obtaining this conviction. “I thank Acting Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Christopher L.C. Kuberiet and his office for obtaining the strongest sentence and letting the public know contempt of police has no place in our communities,” said Chief Hayducka.
