Sheriff Victor Hill’s elite COBRA unit was created to proactively and aggressively confront the criminal element as oppose to reacting to crime.  While the Sheriff’s elite Fugitive Squad has gain legendary status for hunting wanted criminals, COBRA was designed to prevent and lower violent crime by taking criminals off of the street before they get a chance to victimize the public.  Known in small circles as the Sheriff’s version of SEAL TEAM 6, COBRA was involved in several unpublished missions in 2019 which aided Clayton County’s law-enforcement leaders in successfully reducing the murder rate last year.  These missions concentrated on hunting for gun toting criminals prowling the streets to remove them and their weapons from making contact with intended victims.

Yesterday, COBRA conducted a strategic road check at the intersections of Brookstone and Summer Brook Rd.  A black in color Kia Forte made a u-turn immediately upon realizing that they were approaching a Sheriff’s road check point.  COBRA members attempted to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, but the vehicle failed to stop and began driving at a high rate of speed. 

The vehicle ran up onto a sidewalk coming within inches of striking one of the COBRA strike force Deputies who fired his weapon towards the suspect. The bullet struck the rear passenger side door causing the suspect to loose control of the vehicle and run into the wood line.   A responding member of the elite COBRA team strategically placed the front of his vehicle to the door of the suspect’s car to keep him from escaping. The suspect later identified as Travon Laws was taken out of the vehicle while he actively resisted arrest and attempted to reach towards his waist band area.   A purple and black Taurus 9mm handgun fell from Laws waist band area as force was used to take Laws successfully into custody without any injury to the public or Deputies involved. 

Once a search of the car was conducted, another 9mm handgun was found inside of the vehicle in the middle console.  Laws was unlicensed and not old enough to legally be in possession of handguns.  

Whatever Law’s plans for the use of those handguns were foiled by COBRA who put him behind bars to face the wall at Georgia’s toughest para-military jail known better as “The Hill-ton”.
