DATE/TIME: Friday, January 10, 2020 5:30pm
INCIDENT: Hoist Rescue
LOCATION: Ice House Canyon, Mt. Baldy, San Bernardino National Forest
VICTIM: Daniel Evans, 26-year-old male from Santa Ana
SUMMARY:
On Friday, January 10, 2020, at 5:30 p.m., deputies from Fontana Station requested Sheriff's Aviation to search for a reported lost hiker in the Ice House Canyon area of Mt. Baldy. San Bernardino County Sheriff's 40King1 responded to the area. The crew consisted of Pilot Deputy Doug Brimmer, Flight Officer Deputy Cody Korkotsakis and Reserve Deputy/Air Medic Steve Miller.
The crew utilized night vision goggles to locate Daniel Evans at the 8,000 foot level. The steep mountainous terrain consisted of snow and ice, with near freezing temperatures. Evans traveled approximately two hours in the snow at night, while wearing tennis shoes and light clothing. Evans complained of pain to his feet and could no longer continue hiking. Due to the circumstances, it was determined that a hoist rescue was needed.
Deputy Korkotsakis lowered Deputy Miller down to Evans and placed him into a rescue harness. Evans was hoisted into the helicopter, and was transported by ambulance to San Antonio Regional Hospital for hypothermia.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department would like to remind the public about the dangers of hiking in hazardous conditions such as steep, rugged, mountainous terrain covered with snow and ice. Without crampons (a specific type of traction device for ice climbing) and an ice axe, along with the proper training to use this equipment, this type of activity can lead to serious injury or death.
