Snow rescue and winter weather advice

A family is home safe tonight after getting stuck in an off-road Razor in Dove Springs OHV area near Ridgecrest. They called the Kern County Sheriff's Office on January 2 at 10:30 p.m. to say they were stuck in two feet of snow after trying to dig out for two hours. A tow truck was unable to reach them. Then Bakersfield Search and Rescue went out in the early morning hours with a snowcat. The family of four, including two children, were rescued and the Razor removed from the snow.

With a lot of snow remaining in certain parts of Kern County, you’re reminded to be careful.
--Make sure to check weather ahead of time
--Have extra food and supplies to stay warm (the Razor had a heater which lasted most of the night)
--Know your vehicle’s limitations
--Have cell phone and some type of GPS device (this family had a good location with their GPS)
--If you are off-roading or recreating in the mountains, let people know where you are going and when you should be back.
