Suspect Arrested in Connection with a Shooting

San Mateo Police Department identified and arrested a suspect responsible for shooting a man outside of a San Mateo grocery store. East Palo Alto and Fremont Police Departments greatly assisted in the suspect’s apprehension.

San Mateo, CA – On Monday, December 30, 2019, San Mateo Police Department officers responded to the parking lot of La Hacienda Market located at 201 N Amphlett Blvd on reports of a shooting. Officers located a victim who sustained a single gunshot wound to his leg. He was later transported by paramedics to a local trauma center for non-life-threatening injuries. A coordinated effort by multiple law enforcement agencies in the region helped capture both suspects following a vehicle pursuit. The suspects were arrested and found to be in possession of a firearm. The investigation is ongoing.

San Mateo Police Department officers were dispatched to La Hacienda Market Monday afternoon after learning of a shooting in the parking lot. Officers saturated the area and located the victim sitting in his car about one block away from the market. They learned the suspect was an associate of the victim and a disturbance between them had led to the shooting.

Officers broadcasted information describing one suspect as a Hispanic male in his 20s, wearing all black clothing, and driving an older gray Jeep with gold colored rims. A citizen listening to the police scanner saw the suspect vehicle driving along University Avenue / Bay Road in East Palo Alto when he called authorities to alert them. East Palo Alto Police Department located the vehicle and attempted to stop the Jeep.

The suspects failed to stop, and led officers on a pursuit onto eastbound Hwy 84 across the Dumbarton Bridge into Fremont. During the pursuit, the female passenger exited the Jeep and fled on foot into an apartment complex with a duffel bag where she was later arrested by Fremont Police Department. The male driver continued to flee in his Jeep and ultimately surrendered in a parking lot near Post Street / Thornton Avenue where SMPD detectives responded. Officers located a Glock 9mm with a high capacity magazine and a large amount of marijuana in a duffel bag.

SMPD detectives confirmed the male suspect’s involvement in the shooting and learned the shooting was an isolated incident between associates. This is an ongoing investigation and detectives are actively looking into what led up to the shooting at La Hacienda Market. Thank you to East Palo Alto PD, Fremont PD, and the witnesses involved for helping SMPD capture the suspects.
