Suspect Arrested, Charged with Attempted Murder

Middlesex County Acting Prosecutor Christopher L.C. Kuberiet and Chief Mark Tinitigan of the South River Police Department said today that a 33-year-old borough man has been arrested and charged with the attempted murder of his mother.

Kazufumi Nakatani, 33, of South River was arrested and charged with attempted murder in the first degree and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in the third degree.

On December 13, 2019 at approximately 2:38 pm, an off-duty corrections officer came upon a woman, the apparent victim of multiple stab wounds, on the sidewalk outside of her home and called police for assistance.

The South River Police responded to the location and requested assistance from the Middlesex County Special Operations Response Team. SORT made entry to the home and apprehended the suspect who would not answer the door and allow police to enter the home.

During the investigation by the South River Police Department and the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office it was determined that the defendant stabbed his 60-year old mother multiple times in the home they shared on Fairview Avenue in South River.

He is currently being held at the Middlesex County Adult Corrections Center.

The investigation is active and is continuing. Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Guiamano at (732) 238-1000 ext. 123, or Detective McCall at (732) 745-3840.

As is the case with all criminal defendants, the charges against Nakatani are merely accusations and he is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
