Due to a citizen’s phone call, Della Northway arrested on 13 counts including OUI, drugs, and weapons

At 9:50 AM on December 2, 2019, a citizen called APD Dispatch to report a 200 blue Chrysler van swerving, crossing over the lane lines, and driving on the curb in the area of C Street and Foxridge Way.   The caller, who was following the suspect vehicle, stated the driver had passed out in the driver’s seat while sitting at the light at the intersection of Dimond and C Street.  The caller further stated she believed there was a child in the suspect’s car.
The first responding officer stated he saw the vehicle in the area of Old Seward and Dimond traveling eastbound.  A second officer stated she initiated a traffic stop at Abbott Road and Vanguard but the suspect didn’t yield.  Officers quit pursuing in the area of Tudor and Elmore Road after the suspect hit three other vehicles, to include a patrol car, and did not stop.
Six minutes later officers saw the unoccupied vehicle parked on an access road behind a building at 3101 Science Circle.  Officers began following footprints in the snow which led away from the van to a nearby parking garage.  One of the officers entered the garage and found the suspect in the stairwell.  The officer began giving the suspect, later identified as 24-year-old Della M. Northway, commands to put her hands behind her back.  Northway attempted to run out of the door but the officer was able to grab hold of her.  Northway continually tried to reach into her jacket pocket as she was physically resisting the officer.  A few moments later another officer arrived on scene and they were able to escort Northway to the ground and place her into handcuffs.
Officers located a purse, underneath the stairwell, right next to where the suspect was located.  Inside was a handgun and a substance in a syringe which field-tested positive for methamphetamine.
Della Northway was remanded at the Anchorage Jail on the charges of Operating under the Influence, Misconduct Involving a Controlled Substance V, Fail to Stop, Misconduct Involving a Weapon II, Criminal Mischief III, Assault IV, Misconduct Involving a Weapon III – Felon in Possession, Reckless Driving, Driving on a Suspended License, three counts of Leaving the Scene of an Accident, and Resisting Arrest.
Officers were able to determine there was not a child with Northway in the van.  None of the occupants of the vehicles hit by Northway were injured.
