GTPD Community Bulletin: Can You Spot A Counterfeit Bill? Would You Know What To Do If You Receive Counterfeit Currency?

Would you know how to spot a counterfeit bill? Are you a business owner who is wondering what to do if you receive a counterfeit?

Though UV counterfeit detection lamps and counterfeit money pens are helpful tools, there are many other ways to tell if a bill is authentic or counterfeit. Physical characteristics of the banknote, such as ink, watermarks, and text, are intentional security measures to help people recognize authentic money.

When retail associates learn how to spot a fake $100 bill, they can help reduce the chances of a business suffering a loss of thousands of dollars.

The Gloucester Township Police Department is investigating numerous counterfeit bill cases where subjects used “Movie money” (Example Photo Attached) to purchase items. If you are a business owner, always remember to check all bills and train your staff to recognizing counterfeit bills.

If you think you've received a counterfeit note, immediately notify the police. Try to remember the physical characteristics of the person who passed the suspect counterfeit, and if possible write down the person's license plate number and vehicle description. Store the suspect counterfeit apart from genuine currency.
