Tis the season for stolen Christmas presents from your porch – here’s how to report mail theft

It’s the holiday season which means a lot of things - including presents.  A lot of those presents are delivered by our friendly neighborhood USPS, UPS, and Fed Ex folks, among others.  Should packages be stolen from your front porch, please report those thefts (or any mail theft) online with the U.S. Postal Inspection Service at

If you have suspect information regarding a mail theft, still report that theft online with the Postal Inspector but please call the Anchorage Police Department at 3-1-1 first with the suspect description.

If you choose to file a mail theft claim with your homeowner’s insurance, and that insurance company requires that a police report be filed, you may do so with APD online at  Do this in addition to filing a report with the Postal Inspector.

If you are expecting a delivery, and you have a neighbor who is home during the day, coordinate with them to watch for your packages.  Some companies will also allow you to schedule deliveries for a time when you’ll be home.  You may also select the “signature required” option so that if a delivery company attempts a package delivery when you are not home, they will leave a slip of paper for you so that you may pick up the items yourself from their facility.

As always - if you see something, say something.  Let's all look out for each other.  Happy holidays!
