Beware of Xcel Energy Scam in Amarillo.

The Amarillo Police Department has received numerous calls today from citizens who state they are being called by someone claiming to be from Xcel Energy. The caller is telling citizens that they are behind on their bill and that if they don’t pay, their service will be disconnected. This is definitely a scam.

Please be aware of scams like these and other similar ones where the scammer is trying to take advantage of citizens being afraid of not having power during cold weather. The scammers will try ANYTHING. If you’re not sure if you’ve paid your bill, you can contact Xcel yourself. Never take a number that the scammer gives you. Disconnect, look up the number either in the phone book, or online, and then call.

If the scammer asks you to verify your information, don’t do it. Do not give them any of your information, and do not verify by telling them your information.

Remember, it’s the holiday’s and scammers are looking for you to be in a hurry, concerned about holiday parties, concerned about company coming, etc... They’re going to try to take advantage of your generosity and don’t let them.

If you’re not sure, please remember to disconnect and do your own investigation. Contact the Amarillo PD Public Information Office at 806-378-4257. We can answer any questions you have and help you figure out whether its a scam or not.
