Petaluma property owner arrested for shooting at houseguest during an argument

On November 7, Margot Cardarelli, 58 years old, Petaluma, was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon, negligent discharge of a firearm and child endangerment.

At approximately 7:31 am, the Sheriff’s office dispatch received a call of a disturbance in the 11000 block of Sutton Street, between the property owner and the victim. The victim said Margot pulled a revolver out of her fanny pack and shot at her. Deputies responded to the residence and spoke with Margot. The victim left the scene in her vehicle with her four-year-old daughter and called the Sheriff’s office.

Margot told deputies that she had been arguing with the victim about trespassing. The victim was staying in a tenant’s bedroom, which was against the rental contract. Margot initially told deputies that she did not own a revolver and denied shooting at the victim. Upon further questioning, Margot admitted to shooting a round into the ground when she was standing next to the victim.

The victim said she was staying the night at a friend’s house with her daughter. Margot woke the victim up by banging on the door telling her to leave. The victim gathered her belongings and began walking towards her car with her daughter. Margot followed the victim to her car and began taking photographs of her and her daughter. The victim pushed Margot’s cellphone away from her. Margot stepped back, from approximately 5-7 feet away pulled a revolver out of her fanny pack, and shot one round at the victim. The bullet missed the victim and child who was inside the car.  The victim feared for her and her daughter’s life and left in her car to call for help.

Inside the home, deputies found the revolver and a spent casing inside the trashcan. Deputies found the bullet lodged in a tree next to where the victim was standing. The Violent Crime detectives are investigating the incident.

Margot was booked into the Sonoma County jail on felony charges of assault with a deadly weapon, negligent discharge of a firearm and child endangerment. Her bail was set at $50,000. Margot has since posted bail.
