MOVING COMPANY REGISTRATION AWARENESS BULLETIN

The South Brunswick Police Department would like to remind our residents that any moving companies operating in the State of NJ must be licensed.

While this is not new, a recent change to the NJ Public Movers Act, which will take effect on December 1st, makes it unlawful to advertise or operate an intrastate moving company without a license. These requirements are for the benefit of the customer. Some additional safety tips:

Red Flags
The best way to avoid nightmares is to research movers before hiring them.
Watch out for these red flags:

They give an estimate by phone or email; an in-person estimate is required
They require or demand a large deposit.
They do not have a physical address or license on their website as required by law.
They use a generic name when answering the phone, like “Movers”.
They are not listed with the BBB.
They did not provide the legally required brochure; ‘Important Notice to Consumers’
You find many bad reviews of the company.
If they arrive in an unmarked truck, don’t sign anything without verifying the mover.
You’re quoted a very low price that seems too good to be true.
No DOT or MC number on their website, or it doesn’t match the Federal website. fmcsa.dot.gov
