Crime Alert Bulletin Part 1 of 2

**Due to vacation, this bulletin contains three weeks of information. And because this is so long, I have to send it in two parts.**

When I mention “the unit block” of a street, this means the incident occurred at an address anywhere between 1 and 99 of the street.


Notable Cases


On Thursday, 10-03-19 at 7:17 p.m., Officer Covarrubias and Officer Jackson-Berrios were dispatched to the Walgreen’s store at Westlake Shopping Center on a report of an irate male who was causing a disturbance and was possibly under the influence. When the officers contacted the subject, they said the subject became irate and took an aggressive stance with them. The 32-year old transient subject was arrested for threatening a peace officer and for a misdemeanor warrant.

On Sunday, 10-06-19 at 2:52 a.m., a 22-year old Fremont resident was arrested for driving under the influence after he crashed into a Daly City Fire engine at the intersection of Crocker Avenue and Brunswick Street.

On Sunday, 10-06-19 at 6:58 p.m., Officer Taylor was dispatched to the area of Crocker Avenue and South Hill Boulevard on the report of a drunk subject. The reporting party told the dispatchers that a tall white male with his face painted rainbow colors was stumbling on the hillside. Officer Taylor found a subject matching the description. The subject, a 47-year old Daly City resident, was intoxicated and also spoke of harming himself. The subject was cited for being in possession of methamphetamine and then transported to Peninsula Hospital on a psychiatric hold.

On Tuesday, 10-08-19 at 1:00 p.m., a Westmoor High School Vice Principal was threatened by a 14-year old student who was wielding a screwdriver in a threatening manner. The student was arrested and transported to the Youth Services Center.

On Wednesday, 10-09-19 at 4:55 p.m., Officer Aquila was dispatched to the Nordstrom Rack store on a report of four juveniles who stole various athletic items from the store and fled through the parking lot. Approximately ten minutes later, the sergeant found the four suspects matching the description who were on the bus. The four suspects, a 17-year old female San Francisco resident, a 14-year old male San Francisco resident, a 15-year old San Francisco male resident and a 14-year old male Richmond resident, became combative at the sergeant and officer as they were attempting to take them into custody. The suspects were booked for charges ranging from robbery, conspiracy to commit a crime, battery on a police officer, resisting an officer, petty theft, receiving stolen property and committing an adult offense while a juvenile.

On Wednesday, 10-09-19 at 6:22 p.m., officers were dispatched to an unknown injury rollover collision with a person trapped in a vehicle at Serramonte Boulevard and Gellert Boulevard. Fire Department personnel arrived on scene and removed the driver. After she was medically cleared, the driver, a 23-year old San Francisco resident, was booked into jail for driving under the influence.

On Thursday, 10-10-19 at 2:26 p.m., Officer Moody was on patrol in the area of Westlake Shopping Center when he saw a female subject running northbound on the west sidewalk of Park Plaza Drive while pushing a Home Depot cart full of Tide containers. Once the female subject made eye contact with the officer, she stopped running and began walking. Officer Moody exited his patrol car, approached the female and asked why she was running away from the Safeway area. The female said she was running from someone she just met, but she did not know his name. Officer Moody saw four large containers of Tide detergent and three containers of cold sore medication in the female’s cart. The female did not possess a purchase receipt for the items and told the officer she “stole” the Tide containers from a “guy” she just met. The female said she planned to sell the items to purchase drugs because she was starting to become sick and needed money for the drugs. Officer Moody issued the 22-year old transient female a citation for being in possession of stolen property.

On Friday, 10-11-19 at 6:05 p.m., Officer Haas was dispatched to the parking garage at 88 Hillside Boulevard on a report of a person sitting in a car parked in the disabled slot without a placard for several hours. When Officer Haas arrived, he found the vehicle running, and it appeared to be in gear as the brake lights were illuminated. The officer asked the female driver what she was doing, and she said she was waiting to meet up with a friend but couldn’t remember his name or where he lived. The female had a suspended driver's license, and it appeared she was living out of her vehicle. Officer Haas cited the 25-year old female for possession of a controlled substance, possession of a narcotic and for driving with a suspended driver's license.

On Saturday, 10-12-19 at 9:20 p.m., three subjects (a 25-year old Citrus Heights resident, a 20-year old Sacramento resident and a 16-year old Sacramento resident) were arrested for organized retail theft after they worked in concert to steal several clothing items from the Old Navy Store. The subjects fled the store in a vehicle that was eventually located at the Burger King restaurant in Colma.

On Tuesday, 10-15-19 at 8:23 p.m., a 37-year old San Francisco resident was arrested for driving under the influence after he was involved in a vehicle collision at Higate Drive and St. Francis Boulevard.

On Wednesday, 10-16-19 at 3:37 p.m., Officer Moody was on patrol and observed a female who was walking westbound on John Daly Boulevard near Delong Street, dragging a suitcase without wheels and talking to herself. Officer Moody asked the female how she was doing, and she said she was on her way to the BART station. The officer asked the female if she was on probation or parole, and she said she was on probation. The female gave the officer a name, but the dispatchers could not find a name in the system. After giving three false names, the female finally gave the officer her real name. The officer noticed the female appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance and conducted some tests to determine if she was under the influence. The officer subsequently cited the female, a 35-year old Milpitas resident, for being under the influence of a controlled substance and for giving false information to a police officer.

On Thursday, 10-17-19 at 2:44 p.m., Officer Martin was dispatched to the area of Shakespeare Drive and San Jose Avenue on a report of a subject wearing all black who was masturbating. Officer Martin arrived on scene and contacted a subject who had his pants down at thigh level. The reporting party positively identified the subject. Officer Martin placed the subject, a 39-year old San Francisco resident, under arrest for indecent exposure and for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant.

On Saturday, 10-19-19 at 12:33 a.m., officers were dispatched to an apartment on the 400 block of 89th Street after a reporting party heard “strange noises” and breaking glass coming from a neighbor’s apartment. A 42-year old resident was the victim of felony domestic battery, residential burglary and criminal threats by her former boyfriend/father of their child. The suspect, a 36-year old Daly City resident, was booked in jail for the charges listed above and also for resisting a peace officer after he attempted to bite and kick officers during the pre-booking process.

On Saturday, 10-19-19 at 3:10 a.m., a 30-year old Daly City resident, was arrested for driving under the influence after he was involved in a vehicle collision at Hillside Boulevard and Garwood Drive.

On Saturday, 10-19-19 at 11:13 p.m., Officer Graner was dispatched to the area of Gellert Boulevard and Hickey Boulevard on the report of a reckless driver. The reporting party saw the reckless driver and followed the vehicle to a gas station near Gellert Boulevard and Westborough Boulevard in South San Francisco. Officer Graner contacted the subject, a 35-year old San Mateo resident, and subsequently placed him under arrest for driving under the influence.

On Sunday, 10-20-19 at 6:15 a.m., a 26-year old Daly City resident said he was walking on Mission Street near Acton Street when he passed by two males, one of whom was holding a tire iron, and another subject sitting in a white or silver sedan. The victim said one of the subjects who was standing asked him where he was going, and he told them “home”. The victim said he overheard a subject in the vehicle say, “leave him alone”. The victim said he was then struck in the back with a tire iron. The victim could only describe the suspects as Hispanic males, 25-30 years old with bushy hair.

On Sunday, 10-20-19 at 7:20 p.m., Officer Gill was dispatched to a residence on the 200 block of Abbot Avenue on a report of a man attempting to break into a female’s apartment. The 26-year old victim provided the name of the subject and said he had been pounding on her door for 30 minutes and just broke the laundry room window. Officer Maddison arrived to assist, and they found the subject on scene. They arrested the subject, a 28-year old South San Francisco resident, for stalking, residential burglary and vandalism.

On Monday, 10-21-19 at 3:30 a.m., a 32-year old Daly City resident was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol after he was involved in a solo vehicle crash on the 200 block of Bellevue Avenue.

On Monday, 10-21-19 at 10:32 p.m., a 55-year old female Daly City resident was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. The driver crashed into a vehicle on the 1000 block of South Mayfair Avenue and fled the scene. Her vehicle was parked in a driveway nearby, and the vehicle had major damage from the crash.

On Monday, 10-21-19 at 10:55 p.m., Officer Mahan was dispatched to the 400 block of Bellevue Avenue on a report of a reckless driver who had been “burning rubber” for the past two hours. Officer Mahan contacted a subject, and he could smell burnt rubber from the subject’s vehicle. The officer also noticed the subject appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. After conducting tests on the subject, Officer Mahan arrested the subject, a 25-year old San Francisco resident, for driving under the influence of alcohol and reckless driving.


Robberies

There were three robberies during the past three weeks.


• On Monday, 09-30-19 at 10:19 p.m., a 35-year old Daly City resident was the victim of a strong-arm robbery by a 29-year old female former tenant. The victim said the suspect grabbed her iPhone X from her hand during an argument regarding a security deposit. This occurred on the 600 block of Skyline Drive. Officer Collins placed the suspect under arrest for robbery and for possession of a controlled substance (cocaine).

• On Wednesday, 10-09-19 at 4:55 p.m., four subjects committed a robbery at the Nordstrom Rack store. See “Notable Reports” for more information.

• On Friday, 10-18-19 at 12:10 p.m., a 59-year old Daly City resident parked her car in the parking lot at Serramonte Shopping Center and was walking towards Starbuck’s. She said she saw a large delivery truck parked near the curb, and as she was walking, she saw a silver BMW with paper license plates backing into the parking space in front of the truck. The victim said a male quickly exited the BMW and approached her. She said without warning, the subject suddenly grabbed her purse that was draped over her right shoulder and began to attempt to rip it away from her. The victim said she grasped the purse with her right hand in an attempt to retain her purse until she felt pain and let go of the purse. The victim said the suspect then ran back to the BMW and sped away. Officers were able to obtain the license plate using surveillance video cameras. That evening at 10:47 p.m., Officer Sunga was on patrol in the area of Palmcrest Avenue and Southgate Avenue and spotted the BMW which was parked near Burlington Coast Factory. As Officer Sunga got closer to the BMW with his patrol vehicle, he said the BMW backed out of the parking spot and traveled onto Park Plaza Drive. Other officers assisted in conducting a traffic stop on the BMW. The driver, a 28-year old Antioch resident, was on probation for robbery. When Officer Sunga and Officer Chow searched the vehicle, they found a wallet belonging to the victim who was robbed earlier in the day. The officers arrested the suspect for conspiracy to commit a crime, robbery and possession of stolen property. This investigation is continuing.


Residential Burglaries

There were four residential burglaries during the past three weeks.

• Between Friday, 10-04-19 at 3:45 p.m. and Monday, 10-07-19 at 6:50 a.m., an unknown suspect entered a residence via an unlocked first floor bathroom window and took approximately $60,000 worth of jewelry from a bedroom. This occurred at a residence on the 200 block of Canyon Drive.

• On Tuesday, 10-08-19 at 7:09 a.m., a 37-year old resident on the 400 block of 89th Street said a subject entered his apartment via an unlocked rear door and demanded money. The victim said the suspect had a knife in his hand. The victim described the suspect a white male, 23 years old, 5’6”, light skinned, wearing a gray hooded jacket and blue pants. The victim described the suspect as looking “homeless”. The suspect left the residence without taking anything. The victim was not injured.

• On Thursday, 10-10-19 between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., an unknown suspect entered a residence on the unit block of Forest Grove Drive through an open back door and stole over $11,000 worth of jewelry.

• On Sunday, 10-20-19 at 7:20 p.m., a residence on the 200 block of Abbot Avenue was burglarized. See “Notable Reports” for more information.


Commercial Burglaries

There were six commercial burglaries and one attempted commercial burglary during the past three weeks.


• On Wednesday, 10-02-19 at approximately 10:54 p.m., two unknown suspects pried open a door to the Lucky Check Cashing business on Mission Street. No loss was reported, but the door was suffered damage.

• On Sunday, 10-06-19 between 8:30 a.m. and 11:25 a.m., an unknown suspect stole a gym bag containing a wallet, cell phone, bank cards, blue jeans, a gray hoodie and collectible pennies from a locker at the Planet Fitness facility. The victim’s key lock was missing from the locker.

• On Wednesday, 10-09-19 at 8:43 p.m., a 20-year old Daly City resident was arrested for burglary after walking out of the Target store with a cart of unpaid merchandise worth $991.

• On Wednesday, 10-09-19 between 10:20 p.m. and 11:44 p.m., an unknown suspect cut off the lock to a locker at the Planet Fitness facility and stole an Apple XR phone, Motorola phone, miscellaneous clothing, a car key, and a fanny pack containing a debit card, driver's license and $30.

• On Thursday, 10-17-19 between 6:00 p.m. and 8:06 p.m., unknown subjects stole an iPad Pro and wallet containing multiple bank cards, a driver's license and $900 from a locker at the Planet Fitness facility. The suspects were later reported to have used the victim’s credit cards at the Westlake Safeway store, but the transaction was denied. This investigation is continuing.

• On Saturday, 10-19-19 at 5:12 p.m., a classroom at the Woodrow Wilson Elementary School was burglarized. This investigation is continuing.

• Between 5:00 p.m. on Saturday 10-19-19 and 6:00 a.m. on Sunday 10-20-19, an unknown suspect burglarized two offices at 960 John Daly Boulevard.

• On Saturday 10-19-19 between 5:00 p.m. and Sunday 10-20-19 at 6:00 a.m., two suites on the third floor of 950 John Daly Boulevard were the victims of attempted burglary.
