Nathaniel Vankirk arrested after firing a weapon while intoxicated

At 12:28 AM on October 21, 2019, officers were on a trespassing call on the 800-block of E 10th Avenue when they heard a shotgun blast made through a window of a nearby apartment complex.  Other officers arrived in the area, a perimeter was set up around the building, and residents began to come out at the request of police.  By talking to the residents, officers were able to ascertain the apartment number the shot had come from.  After giving several more commands, 29-year-old Nathaniel R. Vankirk came out of his apartment with his young son.
Officers noticed signs of intoxication from Vankirk as they were placing him into handcuffs.  Other officers took custody of the child and were subsequently able to place him with family members.   It was determined that no one else was in the apartment, other than Vankirk and his son, at the time the shot was fired.
After obtaining a search warrant, officers searched the residence and located the shotgun used to fire the single shot through the window; Vankirk had dismantled the weapon and hid some of the parts. There were no injuries and it appears the only damage was to the window the shot was fired out of.  No damage was found to other apartments.
Vankirk was transported to the Anchorage Jail and remanded on the charges of Misconduct Involving a Weapon – Drunk in Possession, two counts of Assault III, Reckless Endangerment, and Tampering with Physical Evidence.
