Robbery Suspect Captured

OFF DUTY DETECTIVE STOPS ROBBERY SUSPECT

An alert off duty detective’s observation led to the capture of a robbery suspect believed connected to a half dozen robberies. On Wednesday October 9, 2019 at 1:41 pm the Valero gas station on Route 1 and Raymond Road was robbed. In that incident the a black male suspect pointed a gun at the gas station attendants, demanded money, and fled in a Honda Accord. The robbery matched similar robberies of gas stations and convenience stores in central New Jersey dating back to August.

On Friday at 10:30 am Detective Rick Delucia was off duty and pulled into a Route 1 strip mall near Henderson Road. Detective Delucia observed a Honda Accord pull into the strip mall that appeared to match the suspect's vehicle seen on video at the Valero gas station robbery. Detective Delucia contacted South Brunswick Detective Bryan Sites and Franklin Detective Ordell Taylor about his observations. Detective Taylor indicated that he had enhanced video from a robbery in Franklin and the Honda Accord had unique features. Detective Delucia confirmed the vehicle he was watching had the same features. The driver of the car had gone into one of the strip mall businesses and detectives waited to speak with him. As the driver, Dionicio Saravia age 40 of North Brunswick exited the store he observed the detectives approaching him and he fled. Detectives pursued Saravia into the Royal Oaks Apartment Complex through several streets around townhouse and eventually capturing him running through a patch of woods.

South Brunswick, North Brunswick, and Franklin Police Departments along with the Middlesex County Prosecutor’s Office obtained search warrants for Saravia's home and the Honda Accord. Evidence recovered linked him to the robberies. He has been charged with robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon, possession of a weapon for unlawful purpose, hindering apprehension and being a fugitive from justice. Saravia was fugitive from authorities in Pennsylvania at the time of his arrest. Saravia remains lodged in the Middlesex County Correction Center.

South Brunswick Police Chief Raymond Hayducka praised the actions of Detective Delucia and all the investigators involved in the capture of the suspect. “This was excellent work by Detective Delucia. He recalled the video and matched it with his own observations. He alerted a team of detectives and pursued the suspect when he fled. It was critical to stop this suspect before someone got seriously injured.” He added, “They say police officer are never off duty, and this case just proves it.”

Chief Hayducka thanked Franklin Township and North Brunswick Police Departments along with the Middlesex County Prosecutors Office for all their assistance.
