INCIDENT: Fatal Traffic Collision
LOCATION: Mariposa Road / Live Oak Street, Hesperia
DECEASED: Jonathen Maldonado, 24-year-old male from Apple Valley
SUMMARY:
On October 16, 2019, at approximately 7:06 pm, deputies from the Hesperia Sheriff’s Station and rescue personnel from the San Bernardino County Fire Department responded to a vehicle versus pedestrian traffic collision near the intersection of Mariposa Road and Live Oak Street in the City of Hesperia. Deputies arrived on scene and found the pedestrian Jonathen Maldonado, deceased as a result of the collision. The vehicle involved in the collision, a 2006 Honda Odyssey, remained at the scene and the driver was cooperative with the investigation.
Preliminary investigation suggested the Honda was traveling northbound on Mariposa Road approaching the intersection with Live Oak Street. Maldonado was walking northbound in the roadway when he was struck from behind. Prior to the collision, Maldonado was riding in the passenger seat of his girlfriend’s vehicle near Interstate 15 and Main Street. It is alleged Maldonado physically assaulted his girlfriend prior to fleeing her vehicle on foot.
The Hesperia Station Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is conducting the investigation. Mariposa Road was closed in both directions until approximately 11:00 pm from Live Oak Street to Main Street while investigators collected evidence.
