Please join Byram Township's Environmental Commission to learn about invasive plant species in our area.

Want to Learn About the Benefits of Planting Native Plants?

Did you know that New Jersey is home to approximately 2,000 native plants?   Many of these native plants play an important role in retaining a healthy ecosystem by providing a natural habitat, food for wildlife and helps control erosion.  Unfortunately, our native plants are being threatened by the introduction and subsequent spreading of non-native invasive plants.  We can help protect our ecosystem by not planting these non-native invasive plants and removing existing invasive plants.

Please join Byram Township’s Environmental Commission to learn about invasive plant species in our area.  On Saturday, October 19th at 9am at the Byram Township Municipal Building, Michael Van Clef, Director of NJ Invasive Species Strike Team Taskforce will deliver a presentation on invasives.  Participants will learn why encouraging native plant species is important to our ecosystem, how to identify some invasive plants, trees and shrubs in our area and how to manage the spread of invasive species.

Following the presentation, volunteers are needed to practice what was learned by helping to remove an invasive species (barberry) on Tamarack Park Trail.  Volunteers are requested to bring their own hand loppers/pruning shears (no power tools are permitted), gloves, tick spray, sun protection and water.  Volunteers should meet Environmental Commission members at the C.O. Johnson parking lot by the soccer field at approximately 10am.

Participants are invited to join us for the presentation and/or removing the barberry on the trail.  This event will occur rain or shine.  For more information, or to RSVP, please contact [email protected].
