Teens sought in Canyon Country crime spree caught

On Wednesday, October 2, 2019, two male juveniles allegedly stole a golf cart from maintenance workers at an apartment complex located on the 18400 block of Jakes Way in Canyon Country. The juveniles then drove the golf cart against oncoming traffic on Sierra Highway, and crossed Soledad Canyon Road until the golf cart became disabled by a curb.

The juveniles then exited the golf cart and fled on foot. The maintenance workers, who were victimized, followed the teens to the location as they yelled out, “He stole our golf cart!” A male adult bystander who witnessed the commotion assisted the victims by detaining one of the juveniles until deputies arrived. The two male adult victims required medical treatment.

Deputies took custody of the juvenile being detained by the citizen on felony charges of taking a vehicle without an owner’s consent. The subject, a 15-year-old boy and local resident, was transported to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station. While the juvenile was at the station, one of the COBRA detectives recognized the teen as being a subject wanted in a Canyon Country robbery that occurred approximately one week prior on September 23, 2019. In that incident, a male juvenile victim was sitting on a planter outside a business on the 19300 block of Soledad Canyon Road, Canyon Country. Two male juveniles allegedly approached the victim and one of the juveniles threatened the victim with a knife and asked for money. After the victim told the subjects he did not have any money, the victim was punched in the head and his prescription eyeglasses were stomped on. The subjects took the victim’s skateboard and backpack. The victim required medical treatment.

After the male juvenile was detained for taking the maintenance workers' golf cart, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s COBRA detectives worked to identify and locate the second subject who was involved in both crimes.  On Thursday, October 3, 2019, the second subject, also a 15-year-old male and local resident, was taken into custody by detectives.

The two male adult victims in the golf cart theft and the one juvenile male victim in the robbery incident positively identified the 15-year-old subjects as being the perpetrators of the crimes.

The two male juvenile subjects were transferred to Sylmar Juvenile Hall where they await a court date on Monday.
