Arrest made for Aggravated Assault, Child Endangerment, and Assault at Youth Sporting Event

On September 14, 2019, Middle Township Police responded to the Clarence Davies Sports Complex in Cape May Court House for a reported disturbance during a youth football game.  Upon arrival of patrol officers, it was learned that a small group of juveniles began arguing and fighting, which resulted in adult spectators becoming involved.  The case was referred to the Department’s Major Crimes Unit for follow up investigation.  As a result of the investigation it was learned, Jermaine McNeal, age 39 from Rio Grande, was witnessed choking and punching a 14 year old juvenile several times during the physical altercation.  McNeal then became involved in a physical altercation with several adults who attempted to defuse the situation.

McNeal was subsequently arrested and charged with the following:

  1. Aggravated Assault in the second degree
  2. Child Endangerment, a crime of the third degree
  3. Assault at a Youth Sporting Event, a crime of the  fourth degree.

McNeal was incarcerated at the Cape May County Correctional Facility awaiting a bail hearing.

Youth sporting events should be a safe place for athletes and parents. The Middle Township Police Department reminds the public that in New Jersey an adult who commits assault in the presence of a child under 16 years of age at a school or community sponsored youth sports event is guilty of a crime of the fourth degree in violation of New Jersey State Statute 2C:12-1f.
