Mayor Baraka, Director Ambrose and Chief of Police Henry Welcome 89 New Police Recruits

Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka, Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose and Chief of Police Darnell Henry welcomed 89 new police recruits into training at a public ceremony at St. Rose of Lima Church yesterday.

“It’s always exciting to welcome a new class of recruits into training, Director Ambrose said. “These men and women are embracing more than a new job, but a career. Becoming a member of the Newark Police Division offers a broad range of opportunities within law enforcement. I’m grateful that we can provide a solid support system of officers and supervisors who will guide our new recruits as they grow in serving the people of Newark.”

The new officers will be trained by members of the Essex County Police Training Academy in Cedar Grove. The class comprises 67 males and 22 females. The diverse group includes 34 African-Americans, 29 Hispanics, 24 White recruits, one Asian recruit and one recruit of Middle Eastern descent.
