Message to Homeowners Who Applied for AFD Firewise Home Inspections

Due to an exceptionally high volume of public response for Firewise home inspections, it is unfortunately a necessity to place new incoming requests into a “standby” category.  Homeowners who have requested an inspection may be postponed until the spring of 2020.  Anchorage experienced an extremely dry summer, accompanied by significant spruce bark beetle and wildfire activity which has dramatically increased interest in the program.  The cooperating tree service companies that provide the Firewise tree removal service are experiencing a similar increase in workload, adding further delays to the process.

Please keep in mind that funding is limited for this program and is made available on a first come first served basis.  It is important that homeowners remove combustible vegetation, including beetle killed spruce trees, as soon as practicable, regardless of the availability of financial assistance. The hazards that these trees pose in homeowner’s yards, due to wildfires and the likelihood of being blown down in windstorms should be mitigated as soon as possible. We apologize for the delays in reaching available AFD staff members to answer your questions and provide you with the service you are accustomed to receiving.
