MEDIA INFORMATION:

On Wednesday, 9-18-2019, at approximately 9:47 am, Redwood City Police Dispatch received an emergency call of a possible home invasion robbery in progress in the 300 block of Poplar Avenue involving four males with masks.

A K-9 Patrol Officer began an emergency response to the location from the area of James Avenue and El Camino Real. At some point during the response, the officer lost control of the patrol vehicle as it was traveling southbound on El Camino Real on the wet roadway and struck the center median of El Camino Real south of James Avenue. The vehicle traveled across the center median of El Camino Real, striking an adult male pedestrian who was standing on the center portion of the median where the officer’s patrol vehicle crossed.
The vehicle continued into the opposing lanes of traffic and collided with two other vehicles traveling northbound on El Camino Real before coming to rest on the east sidewalk.

The pedestrian was transported to a local trauma hospital for his injuries, which are believed to be serious. As of this writing, the status of the pedestrian’s injuries are unknown. The officer involved in the collision was also transported to a local hospital as a precaution and is being examined. The police canine riding in the patrol car did not appear injured but will be examined by a Veterinarian. The drivers of the other vehicles involved in the collision were assessed for injuries by responding paramedics and released at the scene.

The Redwood City Office of the California Highway Patrol (CHP), with assistance of the CHP’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) is investigating the collision.
