Weather Update #7: Jekyll Island Causeway Closure & Curfew

Weather Update #7: Jekyll Island Causeway Closure & Curfew

A Hurricane Watch is now in effect for Jekyll Island and Glynn County.

In accordance with the mandated evacuation order issued by Governor Kemp for Glynn County, The Jekyll Island Authority has signed an Executive Order issuing a State of Emergency for Jekyll Island, effective beginning Monday, September 2 at 12 p.m. The executive order provides the Executive Director authority to issue reasonable orders necessary to protect the public, employees and guests of Jekyll Island. The full executive order can be viewed here: http://www.jekyllisland.com/weather-alert/

Effective immediately, all bike paths, beaches and the Clam Creek Fishing Pier are closed.

Following the executive order for Jekyll Island, the Downing Musgrove Causeway, also known as the Jekyll Island Causeway, will be closing Tuesday, September 3 at 8 p.m. Upon closure, the causeway will be barricaded and no entry will be permitted until re-entry is activated, based on safety conditions following the storm.

The Sidney Lanier Bridge will also be closed beginning, Tuesday, September 3 at 8 p.m. At this time, it is unknown when the bridge will reopen. Following the storm, the bridge will be thoroughly inspected prior to reopening.

The Jekyll Island Authority has also issued a curfew, to begin Tuesday, September 3 at 8 p.m., following the causeway closure. Curfew will remain in place until further notice.

During a curfew, it is prohibited for any person to appear in public in the territory subject to the curfew, including but not limited to, streets, sidewalks, public buildings, beaches, roads, in vehicles or otherwise, and any other public places on Jekyll Island during the stated hours of the curfew. Please be advised that the Georgia State Patrol, Glynn County Sheriff’s Department and DNR Law Enforcement will have a continued presence on the island and will take appropriate action as necessary.

Understand that if you chose to stay and ignore the mandated evacuation order, be prepared to be self-sufficient during and after the storm with no assistance from emergency responders or the support of utilities. There is no guarantee that emergency services or water and sewer services will be available.

We strongly encourage everyone to follow the mandatory evacuation orders and leave Jekyll Island immediately. This storm is incredibly serious and should not be underestimated.

The GDOT, working in coordination with the Georgia Emergency Management and Homeland Security Agency and Georgia State Patrol, will contraflow Interstate 16 from Savannah through US 441 in Dublin to allow evacuation traffic the opportunity to use all 4 lanes of I-16 in the westbound direction.  Contraflow will begin on I-16 Tuesday, September 3 at 8 a.m. and will remain in place until further notice.

Waste Management has announced that all trash collection services have ceased and the facility is currently closed. Waste Management will remain closed until normal operations can return. Once operations are resumed, services will continue under normal collection schedules.  Any pickups/collections that have been cancelled due to the hurricane, will be picked up on their next regularly scheduled collection day.  Jekyll Island residents are requested to ensure all waste containers are tied down and secured prior to evacuating.

Glynn County is not accepting evacuees and will not open a shelter during the storm. If evacuees need a shelter location, contact the Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767.

Please continue to refer to the Glynn County EMA Facebook Page and the Jekyll Island website where JIA representatives will continue to provide updates on the evacuation, closures and curfew:
