Lighthouse Point update on Hurricane Dorian

As most of you already know, Hurricane Dorian has been upgraded to a Category 5 Hurricane with winds measured at 185 mph. The storm is currently making its way through the Bahamas, and most experts project that the storm will soon start making a turn to the north. It’s important to keep in mind that this is a projection. Everyone needs to understand that these types of storms are very unpredictable and conditions can change. Residents need to be vigilant and pay attention to the latest weather forecast.

This afternoon, Broward County Emergency Management announced that we are now under a Hurricane Watch in our area, and can expect strong Tropical Force winds. Here in Lighthouse Point, there is no mandatory evacuation order in place. We encourage you to finalize your hurricane plans by properly securing your home, removing loose items from your yard, gas up vehicles and pickup any last minute emergency supplies you may need.

We just checked with our local grocery stores, pharmacies and gas stations and they reported the following hours of operation today:

Publix at Beacon Light – open until 10pm.

Publix at Venetian Isles – open until 10pm.

Shop Smart – 2001 NE 38th Street open until 11pm

Quik Stop – 2149 NE 48th Street open until 8pm

CVS – 3580 N Federal Highway open 24 hours

7-Eleven – 5200 N Federal Highway open 24 hours

Sunoco – 3900 N Federal Highway open until 8pm.

Exxon – 4900 N Federal Highway open until 11pm

We were notified a short time ago that all area bridges will be placed in a lockdown position at 8:00pm tonight.

There will be no trash or bulk pickup in Lighthouse Point on Monday or Tuesday (DO NOT place trash at the roadside on these days). Doing so may cause storm drains to get blocked up and cause unnecessary flooding in our area. After the storm, remember not to place piles of debris in the roadway. This creates a very dangerous traffic hazard.

Remember, the Police Department will continue to provide regular NIXLE emergency notifications throughout Hurricane Dorian’s progress in S. Florida. To say informed on local hurricane related issues, please encourage your friends and neighbors in Lighthouse Point to sign up now for NIXLE by texting your zip code to 888777 from your mobile device.

Be Safe.
