Schools Open September 3rd - Drive Carefully

With the opening of the 2019-2020 school year next Tuesday, September 3, 2019, the New Castle Police Department would like to remind everyone to be extra careful when driving on Town streets as students end their summer vacations and return to school.

Drivers should be cautious in school areas, remaining alert and keeping their speeds at or below posted speed limits, especially in school speed zones.  Drivers should also be prepared to stop, on both sides of the street, for school buses with flashing red lights as required by New York State Vehicle and Traffic Laws.

The New Castle Police Department proudly supports the AAA Northeast’s 74th Annual “Schools Open-Drive Carefully” campaign, which alerts motorists to the special risks to school-age children from motor vehicle crashes, the leading cause of death for children from five to fourteen years old. The campaign runs through October 13.  We will also be increasing the number of patrols and traffic safety enforcement throughout the Town.

To help protect children, AAA offers these six pedestrian-safety tips to parents:
     •    Look all ways before crossing the street.
     •    Cross only at corners.
     •    Obey police officers, school crossing guards, members of AAA School Safety Patrols, and traffic signals.
     •    Watch for turning cars.
     •    Be especially alert in bad weather.
     •    Play away from traffic.
