SMPD Community Alert:  Unconfirmed Mountain Lion Sighting and Safety Tips

Yesterday, 8/29/19 at approximately 3:20pm, a community member reported seeing a mountain lion walking near the creek in Laurelwood Park (3471 Glendora Dr.). San Mateo Police Officers conducted a thorough search of the area and spoke with park goers about possible sightings, but were unable to locate the animal. At this time, we have only received this one unconfirmed report, however, this alert is for information only and has been issued only as a precaution to our community.

The San Mateo Police Department would like to remind you of a few simple tips to protect you and your loved ones from mountain lions.

-Do not feed deer. This will attract mountain lions, plus it's illegal in CA.
-DO NOT APPROACH a mountian lion, especially if feeding or with offspring.
-Avoid hiking or jogging through wooded areas when mountain lions are most active (dawn, dusk, night)
-Keep a close watch on small children when hiking or travelling in or about wooded areas.
-Don't run if you encounter a mountain lion. Instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks/objects; pick up small children.
